N. 42 48'/ LONG. E 11 33' - ALTITUDE: +1100 m. - VOCALIZATION TYPE: contact calls. - SEX/AGE: adult male and female. - COMMENT: these whining calls are the most frequently heard. - MIC: (A)

DATE/TIME: 19/june/2005 (13 a.m.) - IDENTIFICATION AND BEHAVIOUR: Three birds are soaring above Monte Buceto, near Monte Labbro (same habitat as above). A fourth bird calls several times while flying low above the top of Monte Buceto. - POSITION: Near Monte Labbro, LAT. N. 42 48'/ LONG. E 11 33' - ALTITUDE: +1000 m. - VOCALIZATION TYPE: flight calls. - SEX/AGE: unknown. - COMMENT: A less common call type. - MIC: (A)

DATE/TIME: 30/march/2008 (10 a.m.) - IDENTIFICATION AND BEHAVIOUR: Three birds are soaring above a hill covered by a wide deciduous wood. Two of these birds engage an aerial pursuit performing acrobatic flight. They call several times during the acrobatic flight. - POSITION: Monte Leoni near Montorsaio village, LAT. N. 42°54'/ LONG. E 11°10' - ALTITUDE: +550 m. - VOCALIZATION TYPE: many different excited calls (threat calls?). - SEX/AGE: unknown. - COMMENT: Probably a pair, which is the territory owner, is approached by a third "foreign" bird, which in turn is chased by one of the pair members. Note that here the spectrograms have a different(increased)frequency scale if compared with spectrograms of Recording 1 and Recording 2. Background: Great Tit calls. - MIC: (P)

Zone with pastures, hedgerows and uncultivated land near a wide mediterranean forest. - POSITION: Monte Bottigli forest near Montiano, LAT. N. 42°41'/ LONG. E 11°11' - ALTITUDE: +110 m. - VOCALIZATION TYPE: flight calls. - SEX/AGE: unknown. - COMMENT: The birds soar and glide together at middle height, giving the impression to be a pair. - MIC: (P)

DATE/TIME: 5/september/2015 (10 a.m.) - IDENTIFICATION AND BEHAVIOUR: One bird fly high above a deciduous wood. Zone with woods, pastures and olive groves. - POSITION: Scansano, LAT. N. 42°40'/ LONG. E 11°20' - ALTITUDE: +340 m. - VOCALIZATION TYPE: flight calls. - SEX/AGE: unknown. - COMMENT: The bird was soaring in an updraft quite far from the recordist. - MIC: (P)

DATE/TIME: 9/july/2019 (5.30 p.m.) - IDENTIFICATION AND BEHAVIOUR: Three Short-toed Eagles are soaring high above cultivated fields and forests, searching for updrafts. - POSITION: Poderone near Magliano in Toscana, LAT. N. 42° 36'/LONG. E 11° 16' - ALTITUDE: +130 m. - VOCALIZATION TYPE: flight and threat(?)calls. - SEX/AGE: unknown. - COMMENT: One bird is hovering, stalled against the wind, far from the other two, who are engaged in an aerial pursuit marked by acrobatic flight and simulated attacks, accompanied by calls. It is likely an aggressive challenge between the two. After about two minutes, the birds end their acrobatic display and glide away in different directions. Background: Cicada stridulations, flying insect noise, human voice. - MIC: (P)

DATE/TIME: 11/september/2021 (11.15 a.m.) - IDENTIFICATION AND BEHAVIOUR: Two Short-toed Eagles are soaring very high above mixed forests and pastures. - POSITION: Near the Tocchi Castle, Siena province, LAT. N. 43,1204°/LONG. E 11,2663° - ALTITUDE: +300 m. - VOCALIZATION TYPE: flight calls. - SEX/AGE: unknown. - COMMENT: Slightly different call types are produced by both birds, particularly toward the end of the audio sample, which is part of a longer recording (see spectrograms). Note the more whistled and less nasal quality of these calls compared to those in the previous recordings. - MIC: (Built in unidirectional microphone of Tascam DR100 mkIII)

DATE/TIME: 11/september/2021 (11.55 a.m.) - IDENTIFICATION AND BEHAVIOUR: These are likely the same two birds observed in the previous recording, in the same location. - POSITION: Near the Tocchi Castle, Siena province, LAT. N. 43,1204°/LONG. E 11,2663° - ALTITUDE: +300 m. - VOCALIZATION TYPE: flight calls. - SEX/AGE: unknown. - COMMENT: The Short-toed Eagles are soaring at low altitude, flying in close proximity. No clear behavioural interactions are observed between them, apart from the vocalisations, which are likely produced by both individuals. - MIC: (Built in unidirectional microphone of Tascam DR100 mkIII)
